Short or Long

April 21st, 2008

So, I’m preparing for chemotherapy and shopping for wigs. I have a consultation on Saturday morning at a salon that specializes in helping cancer patients find the right kind of wig but I’m torn. Do I stick with a short sassy style or do I go with long hair for once in my life?

What do you think?

Short?
Wig 1

Or long?

Wig 2

There are a lot of styles to choose from at Wigs.com. Tell me what you think!

Wow, I’m first? Guess I should thank bad dreams for getting me up so early.

You know, I’d probably go for a shorter wig, but that’s me. I honestly don’t know how much work it is to maintain a wig, so I’m thinking that shorter means less maintenance?

Then again, if you’re wanting something really different, then longer might be just what you’re after. Yeah, I’m a lot of help.

I like #1. Its kinda spunky looking.

I love the second one! Just a side not on wig wearing 101… the shorter the hair the “wiggier” it looks.. My wig “flipped up” in the back because it was so short, which made me very insecure when wearing it. I would go with the longer wig (I still say go without a wig! )

Here is a picture of me with my wig on:
    Wiggy
You can’t really tell, but in the back it was about the length that your first picture was (maybe a little longer) and it drove me batty (especially when I had on collared shirts)

All that to say my vote is for Long! ;-)

I vote for long or shoulder length if you really want a wig, but my real vote is no wig at all. Bald is the new black you know! Besides, hats are much less itchy, and super cute!

I have to say, I love the second one. But then again, why not TWO? You are used to short, I think shaking things up a bit with long would be cool.

As wigs can be extra warm to wear all the time; check into fashion scarves you can wear a variety of ways as well. (Not quite as sweat producing, for the summer months.) Just a thought.

Have fun gettin’ wiggy with it, Lisa!

    Love,

As I said yesterday on twitter (I don’t know if you’re following me), I like both but I prefer the long one. I think both would look nice on you though!

I think this is your chance to do something different. Try on a bunch in different lengths and colours and pick the one you like.

I myself would stay bald and tattoo my head:)

I think either would look nice on you Lisa. But I don’t know how much work they are, so

This style would look really cute on you. The flipped up ends are sassy and flattering. Maybe not that exact wig, since it’s called a “costume” wig and might not be all that comfortable… but a similar style with better construction?

Oooh time to go radical I reckon. Do something really different! I love the long one, but also love the scarves ideas, very comfy in hot weather.
You could go blonde, or red, or anything you wanted! How about blonde with some hot pink streaks? Would look fabulous with that tiara ;o)

I like the color of the 2nd one best. I may have to get wigs sometime down the line if my hair keeps falling out so I’m glad you are making it sexy.

I’d say go different, go long - it just sounds easier (as weird as that seems). Then, too, you can do all the different hair stuff (headbands, etc.) that you don’t get to do with short hair!

Definitely go long and sexy! You can do so many things with it. Be daring! How about becoming a redhead or a blonde? Or maybe even a few bright streaks like in the one Vanessa suggested.

I like the first, but definitely try on styles first. You may end up really liking something that is so not you.

I’d say short. I prefer the shorter hair because it’s easier to manage.

If you’ve always wanted long hair, then it would probably be fun to have a long wig. The style that somebody posted…”the costume wig”…was super cute too. I think it would be a good in-between length, and very flattering. Longer than what your hair is now, but not so long to be “in the way,” or bothersome.

Because I would never lie to you: if you’re going to be on steroids which for some reason make our faces bloat, then I’d go long. However, if you are going to be thin in the face, go short and sassy girl!

I have a disease that made me lose all my hair, so I’ve been a wig-wearer for years. I recommend Racquel Welch mono top wigs ’cause they look the most natural.

If you’re only buying one wig, and if it’s going to be a synthetic (not human hair) wig, I’d recommend a shorter one. Mainly because a long wig will get really frizzy and ick looking quicker than a short one (although I’ve found a way to defrizz synth wigs but it’s kinda time consuming).

And if you’re looking for the same wigs as on wigs.com, but for cheaper (I know your insurance probably covers them, mine does, but the initial outlay of money is still quite a bit), check out wowwigs.com

(by the way, I’ve been lurking FOREVER, but I think this is my first comment. Hi!)

Karl, I wonder if in fact you ever actually sleep ;)

geek, It is rather spunky, eh?

Heather, Thank you very much for that tip because I would have never thought of that! By the way you look fabulous in that picture.

    Vote duly noted!

catnip, If it weren’t for the fact that my children are so freaked out by the fact that I would go bald.

3T, “Gettin’ wiggy with it” kills me.

    B, Thanks for your vote!

Colin, I did see your twitter and of course I’m stalking you ;)

I’ve thought about both but the pocketbook will only allow for one at the moment.

DaDuck, If not for the kids I would probably rebel and tattoo my head as well.

Karen, From what I’ve read they don’t seem to be as much work as our own hair but I guess I’ll find out.

Vanessa, I thought about that style as well. It’s just so hard to choose!

Penelope, I was thinking radical as well! I’d do pink streaks if I didn’t have to work in a conservative office.

Robin, I’d probably go for something close to my own color but with highlights.

Tug, I had not thought of headbands until everyone started mentioning them!

Cyndi, I’m already kind of a redhead and I’d like to stay auburn. I don’t know about going blonde. I think I’d look to washed out.

yoshi, Short hair is easier but since it’s a wig I think it will be easy to manage long hair :)

Cindy, Oh, I do have to consider that summer is coming!

usedtobeme, As far as I know I won’t be doing steroids. Oh God, I hope not.

Louise, Well, thank you for de-lurking! Hello! I’ve been looking at the Racquel Welch monofiliment wigs. Thank you very much for the link! Every penny that I can save helps.

You will look mahhhhvelous my dahling.

Absurdist, I love the look of the short one but I’m taking into account what Especially Heather said about the neck hitting the collar.

Damn, this wig stuff is tough…LOL

Miss Ann, There’s a thought…but wigs are damn expensive!!! But that would be fun!

If it was me I’d get one really nice wig that was something I’d like to wear most of the time (love the short one on top!), but then I’d get some less expensive fun wigs that will brighten up the bad days - like a hot pink bob. I’d totally wear a hot pink bob!

I know there are some associations that will donate wigs to women going through chemo in my town, so there might be a program like that where you live. You should post a pic when you decide!

If you can’t afford a wig, CancerCare (800-813-HOPE) and The American Cancer Society provide free wigs to those in need. The local hospital in my town also had a program to provide free wigs to chemo patients. Check with the oncology departments at the hospitals.

I went bald with a baseball cap. But I understand about your kids needing to see you look “normal”.

I like the short & sassy wig. Your face is shaped perfectly for that one & it would accentuate your features & smile. So that gets my vote!
    Flaunt that beautiful face!!

Lisa, I’m so tempted to get a hot pink wig just for the hell of it!

ArkieRN, I just received an email my my local ACS about the Look Good, Feel Good program! Were you in my inbox or something?? LOL

jane, My youngest daughter told me last night that she likes the short and sassy wig too!

For natural, I like the bottom one. Are you going blonde? I agree with the above, dude, totally hot pink bob. Or purple!
