What Today Means To Me

by Lisa on July 4, 2008

Where liberty dwells, there is my country. ~Benjamin Franklin

Originally I had posted a meme for Independence day until a few events took place and I realized that this is a holiday that holds a lot of fond memories for me…and my children.

First I had to make the Tomato Salad for today’s extravaganza at my mother’s house. My daughters go to my mother’s house every day because Dude works from home and since I’m sick so much I sleep a lot. Apparently Teenie and my mother have been planning this Fourth of July party for the past several weeks complete with party favors, Statue of Liberty replica and Uncle Sam piñata.

From what I understand there will be a lot of folks attending the party so I’ve loaded up on anti-nausea and pain medicine so that I’ll be able to persevere…and act sociable. Plus my mother always has good food and I made the Tomato Salad…

Tomato Salad

The recipe is so simple. Two pints of cherry tomatoes cut in halves. An 8 ounce block of mozzarella cut into small cubes. Fresh basil…as much as you want. Some olive oil, some balsamic vinegar. And the key ingredient is Jane’s Krazy Mixed Up Salt, which is sold in a lot of supermarkets. I LOVE THE STUFF!

And no, they did not pay me for an endorsement or provide me with free salt.

Moving on…

As I was making the salad Teenie gave me an envelope which contained this picture…

Happy 4th of July

She is the sweetest thing and reminds me that no matter what holiday we may be celebrating it’s special to her and she makes sure it’s special for everyone else. Teenie made her sister a lizard that was colored red, white and blue because Cam loves lizards.

With Teenie all decked out in her patriotic t-shirt, making sure that we are all decked out in patriotic garb I’m reminded of all the parades I’ve been in and to wearing the same kind of garb.

There was the bicentennial parade in 1976 when our country celebrated it’s 200th birthday and I got to ride on a float dressed like I was from 1776.  I was only 9 years old but I still remember how exciting it was and how proud our country was to celebrate 200 years of freedom.

I remember the year I dressed up Sister D as a baby freedom princess, decorated her wagon and pulled her in the parade.  I think she was only two but we got our picture in the paper.

Then there were a couple of years as a child were I decorated my bike with as much red, white and blue as possible…to cover up the fact that it was BRIGHT ORANGE…so that I could ride with the bike brigade in the parade.  Back then it was all about getting to the end of the parade to win a prize and get some ice cream.   Good times.

I continued to take my children to that same parade when they were very young.  For them it was about seeing the fire trucks, floats and hearing the marching bands.  Most important it was about the candy the fire trucks and floats would throw to them.  They would try to collect as much as possible.

One year we tried to stop Teenie from eating candy but every time we looked she had a piece in her mouth.  As young parents we didn’t think eating candy for one day could hurt too much.  After all she was only three and she ate well at other meals.

We let her eat her entire bag of collected candy from the parade and in about three hours it was all gone.  When it was time to go to the fireworks several hours later Teenie had nothing else to eat other than candy.  Dude put Teenie in the car to go to the fireworks and she threw up all over his car.

Lesson learned:  don’t let three year olds eat an entire bag of parade candy at one sitting on a hot day because they WILL barf.

Today I wish that I had energy to take the girls to the parade and go to the party but it would mean driving an hour to my dad’s house and then an hour back home for my mom’s.  I’m grateful that I have very understanding children who are content to spend the morning with me.  I’m also thankful for a child who understands what freedom and Independence Day actually means and shares it with her family through pictures and stories.

To my American friends…Happy Independence Day.

You are amazing. I will think of you frequently today. That sounds like a line, but it’s really what I do. I really do think of you and your family a lot. I’m wishing the best for you.

I am so making that salad today!

And I love the picture. My eight year old daughter gave a big “awwwww” when she walked past as I was reading this post. It’s a great drawing!

*oh btw, I have never seen this salt. Do you have a recommendation for a substitute?

What lovely daughters you have. I’m sure no matter how you spend this day, they will enjoy it, and I hope you’re feeling up to it so you can enjoy it, too.
The 4th is one of my favorite holidays and as long as I see some sort of fireworks, big or little, expected or some sudden boom! from somewhere that scares the holy shit out of me, it’s a fun day!

That salad truly sounds YUMMY. I will have to make that sometime, and I will have to look for that salt - what a funny name!

I remember going to parades when I was a kid. I remember getting really excited for them and my parents laughing at my cuteness.
We don’t celebrate much anymore today as all the loud fireworks send our dog into tizzy fits so instead of lighting fireworks of our own we spend the night consoling the darn dog.
That salad looks good tho! I’m not much of a tomato person, but my parents are and I’m sure they’ll like it.

Thanks, Lisa, for sharing your recipe. Can’t wait to try it. I’ll check my supermarket for the salt, but it looks like we can order it right from the web site if they don’t have it. Cool!!

Teenie is great! Love the picture! Keep it in mind when times are rough.

Hope you can have a great Fourth, eat lots, and feel well.

HeatherK, She is a great kid but she also has her moments. Hope you enjoyed your day as well.

Shelli, You are so sweet…and very kind.

Melanie, Any seasoned salt will work or just salt and freshly ground pepper but Jane’s Krazy Mixed Up Salt is the best.

Tug, Happy 4th to you too.

annie, Thank you…I hope that Dude and I are doing something right in raising them.

I just had someone scare the living crap out of me with fireworks outside!

That salt is the best!

Mary, Hope you made the salad and enjoyed it.

Sarah, The poor doggie :(

Even the worst tomato haters seem to like this salad so you never know.

Shelli, Then you should definitely make it.

EDW, Thank you and the same to yours.

Pam, You can order it right from the web site.

Thank you for reminding me to keep that picture in mind because she just had a meltdown!

Sister D 07.05.08 at 10:04 am

so we did indeed go over to oreland for the parade, and i was having the same reminiscing moments you were having. it’s funny how the parade has evolved for me. from watching from our house on allison rd. to riding in the wagon with you, and then going over with grandpa gift. and that all led to watching dad in the parade when he was a commish and then walking in the parade with summer stage. and now? now it’s something i look forward to b/c i love fire men … uh, did i say men? i meant trucks. yeh, fire trucks. and i’m old enough to drink the beer that flows generously from the taps in the back of the fire house. what an evolution, huh?

i hope you guys did have a good time over at your mom’s house. we had a few people over and lots of food, but no tomato salad. i did make a kick ass broccoli salad that was gone within 15 mins. of setting it out!

give me a call tomorrow and we can see about seeing each other. yeay!!

Sister D, I TOTALLY forgot about the FIREHOUSE!!! Free beer and hot dogs after every parade at the Oreland Firehouse. I also forgot about the times Dad was in the parade as well…driving around with Grandpop’s ashes.

(Remember we wanted to take Grandpop out for a ride in my convertible one night???)

I love the broccoli salad as well.

Call me when you wake up tomorrow.
