If there were no schools to take the children away from home part of the time, the insane asylums would be filled with mothers. ~Edgar W. Howe
As a kid I used to love this time of the summer, the end of August, the Back-to-School shopping and the flurry of activity that surrounded it. It was like this annual rite of passage as I was entering a new grade each year that started with the fall issue of Seventeen Magazine and ended at the mall with a day long shopping spree.
Seventeen Magazine was my fashion bible during my high school days and the fall issue was always twice the size of the normal, monthly issue. It had all the must have clothes, makeup and hairstyles for the upcoming school year. I remember going through every single page about 50 times before marking the pages I liked.
Once I decided on the clothes I liked I had to get my mother’s approval, which wasn’t always easy. (Sorry Mom, but you were pretty strict about what I wore.) To her defense, she didn’t want me to look like a “common street hooker” or something to that effect. After that was all hashed out, it was time for my poor stepfather to take my mother and I out shopping.
My stepfather would drive my mother and I from mall to mall until we found everything we were looking for…he probably still has nightmares about the pink and white saddle shoes and pink cashmere sweater I just had to have but couldn’t find anywhere. Yes, pink and white saddle shoes.
Every year it was this same marathon of purchasing new shirts, skirts, shoes, jeans, and purses.
I admit it, I was a very lucky teenager and it was all a lot of fun. I know my mother also had a lot of fun in this frenzy every year.
Many of you know that I’m the mother of two girls, two Tween girls and you would think that they love shopping. In fact you would think that they love fashion, love clothes and would look forward to Back-to-School shopping because they are my children. They don’t. Both of them actually hate shopping and throw a fit if I make them try clothes on in a fitting room.
Yesterday, I took Teenie shopping for Back-to-School clothes. I had to promise her that we would go to only one store. I even had to bribe her with ice cream by promising to take her to the Cold Stone Creamery after we went shopping. However she only got the ice cream because she behaved. It was as if I was torturing my eight year old Tween with new clothing.
Today, I’m taking the other Tween, Cam shopping for Back-to-School clothes and this is sheer torture for her. She’s about to start Junior High School so her wardrobe needs to step it up from the Pokemon T-shirts and jeans she loves so much. Cam is probably one of the shortest and most petite girls in her class so it’s time for her to leave the Elementary school look behind and start looking like she belongs in Junior High School.
Still, she will act like I am torturing her this evening when we go shopping.
Thank God my mother is coming with Cam and I so that when I pick out outfit that doesn’t resemble Pokemon but will make her look fabulous, I have backup that I’m not a crazy lunatic. Of course I had to bribe both of them with ice cream.
In other news: I’ve received quite a few emails about bracelets. I’ve been saving a dollar here and there for the past year so that I can go to the Philadelphia Bead Expo this weekend and get more supplies. I love the bead expo!!! The last time I went was two years ago and I got enough supplies for two years. It’s time to restock!
With September fast approaching, I will be making more Ovarian Cancer Awareness bracelets because September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month. For October I will have Breast Cancer Awareness bracelets.
I currently have 13 pieces available and have posted the pictures on Flickr. If you are interested in any of those pieces, please email me at lisa@clusterfook.com.

They just haven’t reached the stage yet where they will love shopping. It’s coming. Maybe by Christmas vacation.
I sent payment! I’m proud because I am kind of a dork about that stuff. LOL

My daughter, who’s 5, hates to go shopping. My son, though, who’s 3? You mention “shop” and he’s dressing himself and pulling on shoes. The boy loves to shop with Mommy and/or Daddy. I think, though, with him, it’s more of a “let’s ride in the car” kind of thing than the actual shopping excursion.
Good luck with them and school. My daughter started kindergarten this year. I can’t imagine doing teenage stuff yet.

I loved your girls before but now I love them even more. How is that possible? We are cut from the same cloth. I can’t stand the endless shopping spree and the checking out every rack, I just can’t do it.
On behalf of all of us, I’m really very sorry and thank you for the ice cream.

Mine starts Junior High TODAY! Then we are out on Tuesday for the hurricane. I am lucky that she had to adhere to a uniform policy of plain jeans or khaki bottoms, and white, navy, or black collared tops. Saves time at the store!

I’m so glad I’m still at the stage where I can shop for them w/o consulting! Have you had the girls check out crazy8.com …it’s the Old Navy version of gymboree and they have really cute stuff. Wish I knew anything about beading so I’d have an excuse to stalk you at beadfest. But, dude, let’s totally plan to go to the next one in March. Sante Fe in the Spring would be lovely!
Have fun, girl! LMK about next Thursday–still free if you need me.

Perfect time for this post. I just walked in from the mall. LE( my 11 )year old spent a few hundred dollars on back to school clothes last year. The majority of which still sit in draws never worn. Today I hit Steve and Barry’s. 8.98 for everything in the store. She got 3 pairs of beautiful jeans and cut shirts to match. If she doesn’t wear them I’m only out a few bucks. I HATE the mall. I would rather have my teeth pulled. Good luck with your shopping trip. Just wait in a few more years they’ll be begging you to go shopping

OMG, I remember getting my first Seventeen magazine when I was 12. A teenage Diane Lane was on the cover. I remember those August issues signaling the back-to-school excitement. I think the prom issues in the spring were double issues as well.
I was a girly girl and loved shopping, so probably, if I get to have a girl, she’ll end up being the opposite as well.

I still love the back to school shopping. Although it’s a little different now that I’m in college, it’s more textbooks and less fun clothes.

I’ve been in School Shopping Hell with my 15 year old the past two weeks. The older they get, the more they love shopping and the more expensive taste they get.
I think we are about the same age (are you an 80’s girl?) and I lived for the arrival of the September Seventeen magazine. I would sit and read it from cover to cover over and over, studying every single page, even the ads. The only other issue that was as exciting as the back-to-school issue was the prom issue, which all of the formal dresses in there.
Oh, the memories!

Shelli, If they wait til Christmas vacation I’ll be broke from buying them Christmas presents.
Sarah, Your son sounds really cute. We haven’t even hit the teenage stuff yet…this is just TWEEN stuff.
Kizz, You are too funny.
blondefabulous, OMG – be careful with the hurricane. A uniform would certainly be much easier to deal with.
Dagny, For REAL!
Finn, You can always borrow one of my tweens.
HeatherK, I have not checked that web site but I will. Looks like you will be really stalking me on the 28th lol.
diva65, I totally HATE the mall. We cleaned up at Target, surprisingly. Target had some of the cutest clothes.
Carla, I remember the prom issue of Seventeen.
Sarah, Oy – college…the cost of textbooks is enough to make me have a coronary. I can buy an entire wardrobe at Target for the cost of one of my textbooks. Seriously.
Jennifer, See you have entered the Teen Years. I’m still in the Tween Years. Big difference.
Yes, I’m an 80’s girl. I think that’s when the prom issue first came out too but the fall issue was much bigger than the prom issue. Well at least to me.

I HATE shopping, but did try to make it fun for K… Now I just take her hand-me-downs because I work around a lot of yuck so I don’t have to dress up, & she’s got GREAT taste!

I’ve never been nuts about shopping but the last couple Christmases where my cart kept getting hit and I kept getting dirty looks like their talking on a cell phone instead of watching their business was MY fault? I shop online now and make a point of making something for each person on my list.
Last year’s was knitted snuggly slippers in silk yarns for everyone. This year is going to be a big more varied, but NO ONE is getting mittens. I did a set once in elementary school and it was enough for a lifetime even tho they came out just right.

Tug, I used to love shopping for myself but I hate it. Absolutely hate it. Sunday and yesterday went fairly well for both girls. I was shocked. They have enough stuff to start the year.
hello ha ha narf, Oh thanks a lot. You know that the 8 yr. old gave the 11 yr. old pointers on how to “deal” with me just so she could get the ice cream at the end of the shopping trip. Little plotters.
PandoraWilde, Last year I did all of their back-to-school shopping online because of my surgeries. It was such a disaster to do it that way for them. This year I wanted them to pick out their clothes. It went a lot better this year.
