Figuring Out a Way to Help

by Secondhand Karl on February 27, 2009

in Cancer Sucks, Dude

A lot of you are asking how you can help Lisa’s family and the short answer, for the time being, is I don’t know. I’m working on it. There’s a Donations page on Lisa’s blog, but after talking with the Dude on the phone, he doesn’t have access to that Paypal account, and he’s not sure if Lisa left him any notes about the account or not.

So for now, please don’t use the Donations page because I don’t know if Dude will have access to the money.

I think we’ll strive to get a new Paypal account in the near future for those that wish to help financially. Right now, Dude is really sick with a stomach virus, so the last thing he wants to do is set up bank routing information with Paypal.

Be patient and we’ll figure something out. He sounds like he’s in agony, Dude, and says he thinks Lisa is actually doing better off than he is at the moment.

For now, lots of prayers and good wishes are plenty.

Hi, this is so sad. If any one has a physical address of the family, they can send a real sympathy card from my website and I will pay for it. The family needs lots of love.

How about a chipin widget that can be shared on many of our blogs, via twitter, etc etc. I’ll be glad to help if someone agrees to handle getting the proceeds to Dude.

I think this is a fantastic idea! Any kind of widget that we can all have on our blogs would be good. I don’t know much about this stuff but this sounds good.

I hope Dude feels better very soon!

Thank you for the update! I really hope she left him a note about the account, because I’m sure a lot of people donated. Maybe if she didn’t, he could contact PayPal when he’s feeling better and tell them about the situation. Lisa and her family are in my thoughts. :)

Hope I’m not out of line here…I just think back to when my daughter was dying from her cancer.

What really would have been helpful would have been grocery deliveries (there has to be some online services that would deliver), or maid or errand services.

It was one thing being there for my girl as she passed. Keeping up with the mundance chores of life that don’t stop was another.

Food for thought for you Karl…if you felt is was worthwhile to explore.

I imagine folks would gladly paypal you some money and you could online shop and send the groceries.

Someone mentioned purchasing food or gift certificates for groceries via Schwan. I know they deliver around here. There’s a thought.

Also, if anyone is local and wants to make food, I’d be happy to drop it off. Did once this week already.

I can’t believe he has the stomach flu. There has been a terrible virus going around locally. We had it two weeks ago. Many of my students have had it. I hope I didn’t have remnant germs when I saw him! I waited until I was feeling completely better!!!

Karl (or anyone close),

I wanted to send food (clearly, I am not sending it from Arizona). What would be helpful is a list of places close to Lisa’s family where I could order take out and have it delivered to them. I was hoping, since you had been there, you would have a couple names and I’ll do the rest. I have their address for delivery.

For those looking to send gift cards or something, there is an Applebee’s restaurant nearby. I believe they do take out. There’s also a local restaurant not far from them called Stoppers. Their website is: http://www.stoppers422.com. They have good food and also do gift cards and take out. I’m not sure about pizza places they use and like. I’m betting maybe Karl knows though.

Time has passed, the Wheel has turned.
It is time for me to move on.
I will walk hand in hand with the Ancient Ones,
and with my ancestors who came before me.
Great Mother, welcome me back into your womb,
I come to you and know I am blessed,
for my life has been one I am proud of.
As I enter your world, wrap me in your loving arms,
and welcome me.
Lord of Death, I wait for you to take me,
I come to you willingly, with eyes wide open,
as my last moment approaches on the horizon.
May I look upon you without fear, without pain,
and knowing that those who walked before me,
await me on the other side.
O Ancient Ones, give me strength to take these final steps,
and allow me to do so with peace and dignity.
Let my family mourn my passing but not my loss,
and let them heal knowing I will see them again.
Time has passed and the Wheel has turned.
It is time for me to move on.
Lisa, You will be missed.

How about an Amazon wishlist with household items on it? (Food, etc) People who want to give but don’t live locally can shop and ship. The address can be marked private.
Does Peapod deliver to the area? I think they do gift certificates, but setting up an account might be kind of a pain right now.

I don’t know how to express what i feel. I have been on the fringe, reading as Lisa has been battling this. I am sorry to see that though she has fought valiantly the cancer is winning. I am sure she will be waiting for her loved ones on the other side with open arms.

My prayers are with Lisa…Dude, and the two girls.

If he got the bug I got earlier, I would bet he would be in a fair bit of agony. The good news is the agony should only last about 12 hours if it’s the same bug. But oh me oh my it’s a doozer when it’s on. Feel better, Dude! And continued hope for peace for Lisa.

Thanks for the update Karl, I was actually really dreading to check the site today.. After reading your post I went through some other old ones, and I found a reference to Ezra’s page about a laser engraved keychain.. does that still help? Because I would really like to get a couple of them..

I contacted Make and Take Gourmet yesterday to see if they would be willing to assemble and deliver meals to Lisa’s family if I bought a 12 meal package. I haven’t heard back from them yet, though. Here’s the link if anyone else wants to try: http://makeandtakegourmet.com/wyomissing/ It looks to be about 4 or 5 miles from Reading, so hopefully they would be willing to help.

I agree with won that food helped when my sister passed away. One of my sister’s friends belongs to a church and someone from the parish brought food every day. My dad’s coworkers brought food. We ended up with so much food that my parents said even grocery or restaurant gift cards would have helped too, so some things didn’t go bad. The nice thing about restaurants is many allow take out, and no cooking for the family. The nice thing about groceries is that it can be used anytime.

One thing we ended up with a lot is flowers. The house was filled with them. I would recommend not getting flowers, an rather donating to causes Lisa was apart of. But that’s just my thoughts from my experience.

Karl,
I was thinking….. I know I gave you that link for the site that will transform a Blog into a hardcover book, a treasured keepsake for Lisa’s Children and husband.
What about working with Dude on when the book is ready, setting a price higher than the cost of it, to be sold to Family, Friends, and Internet Friends, and having all the proceeds go to a trust fund or something, for the children?

That way, not only does the family (and others) get to have a hardcopy keepsake of Lisa’s writings and the wonderful outpouring of supportive comments through out this country from everyone, but also a way to provide for the two beautiful daughters she left behind.

It’s just a thought I had and hopefully it will be helpful to Lisa’s family.
